On this day, in 1994, Jason McAteer's World Cup dream came to an end as Republic of Ireland were beaten 2-0 by Netherlands at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, USA.

Ireland had progressed through a group consisting of themselves, Italy, Mexico and Norway to reach the last 16, but first-half goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk put Dick Advocaat's side into the quarter-finals of the competition.

McAteer was introduced as a 63rd minute substitute, in a game which also featured future Wanderers midfielder John Sheridan.
